Adivasi women from Ganj Basoda in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha District celebrated International Women’s Day by demanding greater representation in grievance redressal processes. Their meeting with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate emphasized the importance of including women’s voices in decision-making.
The Sahariya community, a particularly vulnerable tribal group (PVTG), faces significant challenges, including degraded landscapes due to excessive stone quarrying, contaminated water sources, and rising seasonal migration. Many families struggle with limited livelihood options and are forced to work in informal mining, which has led to serious health risks, including tuberculosis and silicosis. Economic hardships often push children into early labour, impacting their education.
In their representation, the women outlined key demands:
Implementation of Nal Jal Yojana and PM Awas Yojana to ensure access to clean water and adequate housing.
Inclusion in the grievance redressal committee to prioritise women’s concerns.
Establishment of a dedicated mechanism for addressing women’s issues and regular consultations with authorities.
Support for tuberculosis patients and their families to tackle the health crisis head-on.
Improvement of infrastructure, including proper roads and transportation, to facilitate education and healthcare access for all.
